MRTOAD210 May 26, 2005 16:22:52 | REMOVING DARK STAIN OFF KITCHEN CABINETS Hi, I am trying to refinish my kitchen cabinets. They have a very dark stain on them. I tried several chemical strippers but the wood does not get very light. Is there something I can use to help lighten the wood. I would like to have cabinets in a golden or light cherry colors....Help |
Mark May 27, 2005 16:54:00 | RE: REMOVING DARK STAIN OFF KITCHEN CABINETS If the stain is part of the finish (lacquer stains are very common), you can use Circa 1850 Furniture Stripper to remove the finish and colour. If the stain is in the wood the only way to lighten the cabinets is to use a bleach. |
MRTOAD210 Jun 01, 2005 12:20:51 | RE: REMOVING DARK STAIN OFF KITCHEN CABINETS Hi, thanks for your response....I believe the stain may be in the wood. Will bleaching remove just the color and not damage the wood. How light will the wood get???? Will I have to sand the wood after bleaching?? If the stain is lacquered on, where can I get the Circa 1850? I live in NJ Thanks for you help.... : ) |
Mark Jun 02, 2005 07:00:32 | RE: REMOVING DARK STAIN OFF KITCHEN CABINETS Bleaching will remove the stain and will soften the wood fibers. You will have to sand after bleaching. Depending on the type of bleach used (oxalic acid or peroxide) the wood will more than likely have to be restained. Circa 1850 Furniture Stripper is available throughout New Jersey at paint and hardware stores. If you give me your ZIP I can tell you the nearest stores. |
Rena West Jan 16, 2007 10:30:26 | RE: REMOVING DARK STAIN OFF KITCHEN CABINETS I want to remove dark walnut stain that has a polymeur coating over them, they were originally a light wood then we put this dark stain on them. What would be the best product to start with to strip them because I want a whole new look. |
Mark Jan 16, 2007 11:02:23 | RE: REMOVING DARK STAIN OFF KITCHEN CABINETS The first step would be to remover the coating. You can use any of the Circa 1850 Strippers for the job. Do you plan to take the cabinet doors off prior to stripping? |
Rena West Jan 16, 2007 11:43:10 | RE: REMOVING DARK STAIN OFF KITCHEN CABINETS Yes Don't you think it would be much easier? After stripping then I have to choose a stain to put on them. So after stripping them, what would be the next steps and what products would I need to use to give a clean shiny new look? |
Mark Jan 16, 2007 11:47:40 | RE: REMOVING DARK STAIN OFF KITCHEN CABINETS Yes, it would certainly be a lot easier to remove the doors in order to do the stripping work. After stripping off the finish, you can then decide if you want to stain the wood or just leave them as is. There are several options available, but it would be best to see what the wood looks like first. |

mark Sep 07, 2015 23:16:03 | Re: REMOVING DARK STAIN OFF KITCHEN CABINETS The type of bleach would depend on the type of stain. Two-component peroxide bleaches will remove most stains. Dark stains due to moisture require oxalic acid bleach. |
Kaye Jun 08, 2024 17:19:12 | Re: REMOVING DARK STAIN OFF KITCHEN CABINETS I tried to remove a black blotch of something from an unfinished cabinet but it just smeared using baking soda and water. |
Mark Jun 09, 2024 06:17:47 | Re: REMOVING DARK STAIN OFF KITCHEN CABINETS Your can try using a solution of dish washing soap in warm water, or an ammonia cleaner. More powerful cleaners like TSP may be required. |
Jane Amador Jul 27, 2024 14:08:05 | Re: REMOVING DARK STAIN OFF KITCHEN CABINETS I would love to remove the dark stain from my kitchen cabinets. They were light oak and have been stained walnut. I would like to try to remove the dark without stripper.also so of the cabinets are not read wood just the doors. |
Mark Jul 28, 2024 02:58:23 | Re: REMOVING DARK STAIN OFF KITCHEN CABINETS You could try to bleach the cabinets, but only if there is no finish (varnish, lacquer, etc). Sanding would work as well, but you would have to be careful if the cabinets are not solid wood. |
