Circa stripper leaving white residue
I am stripping 20 year old oak cabinets. Had some Circa stripper sitting around so I did one. Turned out perfect. Used up all the old stripper and went and bought more. Was watery coming out of can. Old stuff was always somewhat thicker and gel like. Took forever to work. There was no obvious finish bubbling up in the stripper and getting thick. It did work but much different than my older can. Left a bit of a white film on wood that sort of came off with stripper and steel wool. Definitely not as quick and easy as the old stuff and seemed to take a lot more stripper to do the same job. Has the formulation changed? I’m not doing anything different, just doesn’t seem to work as nicely now and there is a bit of residue. Any suggestions????

Re: Circa stripper leaving white residue
The formula for Circa 1850 Furniture Stripper has not changed since it was first developed. The viscosity (thickness) of the stripper can vary depending on the time and temperature of storage, but this will have very little effect of how it strips. In general, Circa 1850 Furniture Stripper is liquid, while Circa 1850 Heavy Body Paint & Varnish Remover is more of a gel.

There a many different things that can affect how the stripper works, but usually the difference lie in the finish and any polish or oils on the finish.

Varnishes can be somewhat tricky, as they can sometimes melt away, sometimes crack, and sometimes get gummy.

I suggest you clean the surface first with a warm TSP solution to remove any polish or grime. Apply a thicker coat of stripper onto an area of 1-2 square feet. Allow the stripper to work for a few minutes (if it dries out, you will need to apply more). For flat surfaces, use a wood scraper to remove the softened varnish. For curved surfaces, use a 2 inch paint brush that you have cut the bristles so they are only 2 inches long.
Clean up by dipping steel wool or stripping pads dipped in the stripper.

The stripper is really thin and not working
Hi, I have used circa 1850 d-solver many times. I just opened a new can and it’s not really working and is super thin. It just evaporating and not working properly. I finished my last can, it was super effective and I’m on the same project… this can isn’t working very well. What should I do. I can’t return it and even if I could, the place I got it from likely has the same batch.
Please advise,
Thanks
Joel
