oil stain over teak oil
About 3 years ago I sanded down our large front door and
finished with teak oil only. I was happy with the result.

However, I would now like the door to be stained darker and am
trying to figure out how to approach it. Can I simply lightly sand
the door and apply a oil stain and poly finish? Do I need to strip
the teak oil off somehow? If so, with what?

Thanks.

RE: oil stain over teak oil
Hi Andrew,

If the teak oil you applied was actually a curing oil there should be no problem in applying stain. Did the Teak Oil leave a finish on the surface of the wood? Some products advertised as Tung Oil or Teak Oil are actually a combination of oil and varnish. If the product you used had a stain in it I bet there is also varnish in the product.

What product did you use?

If there is no finish on the wood proceed to wipe clean the surface with mineral spirits. Sand the wood with 180 to open up the grain. Stain. Max 2 coats.

Good Luck

Re: oil stain over teak oil
I have just had a teak door dipped and stripped. wax has been applied. I would like it darker so can I apply stain to the door as it is or will I have to try and remove the wax?

Re: oil stain over teak oil
You can only put more wax on top of wax. There are coloured waxes that can be used, but wax is no a permanent finish.
In order to apply any stain, the wax would have to be completely removed.

Re: oil stain over teak oil
You can mix oil-based stains with Circa 1850 Tung'n Teak Oil and spray it lightly onto your substrate.
Test first to ensure you are obtaining the look you want.
