Cindy Olsen May 02, 2005 09:45:55 | adding color over polyurethane cabinets Hello!... I am thinking about changing the color of my cabinets. They are made from hickory and clear coated with polyurethane. I would like to add color to them. I need the easiest way possible.(I know everybody does)What would be the prep work and what kind of finish should I use. I was thinking of just a white wash or go to the other end of the spectrum with black. Would the wood grain show through your finish with these colors? Thanks for your time, Cindy |
Mark May 02, 2005 10:27:26 | RE: adding color over polyurethane cabinets The easiest solution would be to use a varnish stain (such as Stain'n Varnish) that could go right over your existing finish without having to strip it. You simply wash the surface and light sand. Apply as many coats of Stain'n Varnish as you like. Each coat gives you more colour and makes it more opaque. |

Mark May 02, 2005 13:57:45 | RE: adding color over polyurethane cabinets A very good one is Circa 1850 Furniture Cleaner. It is not only used for finish preparation but also for monthly maintainance of wood furniture. |
marilyn May 14, 2005 21:36:55 | refinishing whitewashed bannister and staircase I have a whitewashed oak spiral bannister (railing and spindles as well as wood on the sides of the staircase) that I would like to refinish in a medium colored oak stain. The builder circa 1991 used a water soluble (?) urethane coating over the whitewash. What is the easiest way to go about removing the old and applying the new? Are their products you recommend for both removal of old stain and what to use for new finish? |

Mark Dec 23, 2010 09:55:29 | RE: adding color over polyurethane cabinets You can spray Stain'n Varnish, after thinning to desired consistency. |

Billy Dec 10, 2012 21:05:19 | RE: adding color over polyurethane cabinets I am refinishing a 1937 Radiobar in poly and need to bring some of the elements closer in color. Will the aforementioned process work with that? Is your product available in SC?z Also, I am having a hard time keeping pits and bubbles from showing up oin the finish. I did a wet sand and a first coat ok, but the next and second were both worse. Is my poly contaminated? Dust? I've tried natyural bristle and foam. Tried cutting poly to 50/50. HELP!!! |
Mark Dec 14, 2012 07:22:10 | RE: adding color over polyurethane cabinets First of all, Stain'n Varnish would be the perfect product for your application as it can be colour matched to almost any colour. You can order it directly on this site. Pits and bubbles ~ sounds to be me that you are over brushing the polyurethane. |
Billy Dec 20, 2012 01:18:42 | RE: adding color over polyurethane cabinets not over-brushing for sure. only one stroke with each pass. Am going to try 2 or 3 more coats, then use a finishing spray. As for ordering, that would take too long. I only have 5 days /: |
Mark Dec 20, 2012 06:40:17 | RE: adding color over polyurethane cabinets You may be able to purchase locally. |
Crystal Kennedy Jun 19, 2016 06:36:11 | Re: adding color over polyurethane cabinets My kitchen is very dark and I was thinking about trying to lighting it up by changing my cabinets. They are very dark, I believe walnut. There's lots of them so, What would be the best thing to do and the easiest? I really don't want to paint them but would love for them to be a lot lighter! |
Mark Jun 20, 2016 05:51:20 | Re: adding color over polyurethane cabinets If the walnut colour is natural, the easiest way to lighten them would be to apply a coat of Stain'n Varnish White Birch. This will highlight the grain and give them a fresh new look. If the walnut colour is due to a varnish stain, you can strip off the varnish to yield a lighter colour underneath. |
Marian New Nov 19, 2022 18:32:20 | Adding color to polyurethane (to change the color of the poly? I have laminate countertops and am not happy with the color. Can I add a blue color to the polyurethane to help change the color of the countertops? Thank you. I’d appreciate any help or advice. |
Mark Nov 20, 2022 11:57:38 | Re: adding color over polyurethane cabinets Laminates are not easily varnished, as the top coating is resistant to anything sticking to it. If you do decide to coat it, the surface will need to be well sanded (and even then I am not sure a polyurethane will adhere over time). You can add colourants to polyurethane, but unless these are dyes, or transparent pigments, you will either end up with a mottled look, or an opaque finish. |
