varnish/stain not curingMessage: Hi, I have a Maple dining room table that I have stripped and refinished. I used the softstrip to remove the old poly / varnish. I had some spots that I had to leave the stripper on overnight to get at. Once finished, I allowed the tabletop to dry. I then gave it 2 good wipes with mineral spirits, allowing it to dry between cleanings. I am now applying a stain/varnish mix and there are spots which have not cured....still sticky. What have I done? More important, what can I do... |

RE: varnish/stain not curing Message: It sounds like you wiped down the wood adequately before staining. Assuming that to be the case, perhaps the wood you are working on is an oily wood or a knotty pine. The wood’s oils inhibit the curing process. The sap coming through the pine can also interfere with curing. If this is the case wash some of stain off with solvent and then restain just after the solvent has evaporated. The solvent should remove the oil from the surface of the wood so that the stain will now dry. If you are working on knotty pine seal the wood with dewaxed shellac. Then restain. The other possibility is that you applied the stain to thick on the wood. Oil based stains take a long time to cure if applied to thick in certain areas. Perhaps you did not pull off the excess stain evenly and it is those areas that are not drying well. To resolve this you should allow more time for the stain to cure. If this doesn’t work you can remove some of the excess stain by scrubbing with fine steel wool and mineral spirits. Then wipe off. Excess. Your other option is to remove the excess stain with Circa Furniture Stripper and then restain and be sure to wipe off the excess. |

RE: varnish/stain not curing Message: Probably not an oily wood or knotty pine problem since the Ted states the table is maple....but thanks for the solution to that problem. Ted, what stain/varnish mix are you using and how are you applying it? |

RE: varnish/stain not curing Message: Sorry, it did not register with me when I read your question that the table was Maple. Hopefully, my answer will be helpful to someone else. Good luck |
