Varnish does not dryMessage: Refinished table top. Stained and then used 1850 paste varnish. It has been 12 hours and there are still patches that are "sticky". What should I do? |

RE: Varnish does not dry Message: What type of stain was used? How long did you wait before applying the Antique Paste Varnish? How was the varnish applied? What is the temperature of the room where the table is drying? Is there any ventilation? |

RE: Varnish does not dry Message: I am having the same "not drying" problem with the paste varnish. I have used it before with great results. This time in refinishing a mahogany trunk, the varnish remains tacky after 24 hrs. The pate varnish was rubbed in with a clean lint free cloth. After 24 hrs. I have rubbed it down with 0000 steel wool and reapplied.. same result. Do I have to strip it off and use something else?? The piece was dry and clean. It is humid but that has not been a problem in the past. |

RE: Varnish does not dry Message: Humidity can certainly be a problem, especially if there is inadequate ventillation. However, you mention that you are "refinishing" the trunk. If so, please describe all the steps that were used after removing the finish, as well as what remover was used. |

RE: Varnish does not dry Message: I stripped the old varnish off with circa 1850 stripper. I then cleaned the surface with methyl hydrate. Then I gave it a light sanding. Cleaned off the dust with a slightly damp cloth. Let it sit for a day and then applied the first coat of paste varnish. after 8 hours it was still tacky, so I left it till the next day. Still tacky (but not quite as much) I steel wooled it (0000) and then applied another coat hoping that would dry both layers. 8 hours later I can't touch the surface as it is tacky and leaves marks even from just a tap. |

RE: Varnish does not dry Message: Sounds like you did everything right....could it be the humidity or lack of air circulation? Let it sit for a day or two more and let me know what happens. |

RE: Varnish does not dry Message: I am having the same problem with Circa 1850 Stain Varnish not drying! I was redoing my oak kitchen table with Golden oak stain and varnish. I sanded the top until very smooth and cleaned the surface of dust. Applied the finish, it looks good but it is not drying well! I used 0000 steel wool on it this morning and was going to apply another coat. Any suggestions. other than wait longer. |

RE: Varnish does not dry Message: Did you clean the surface with anything either before or after the original sanding? How did you apply the Stain'n Varnish? How long ago did you apply the finish? What is the temperature and humidity? |
