refinish kitchen cabinetsMessage: To begin, GREAT website . . . I would like to refinish my mid-1990's "pickled" oak kitchen cabinets. Based upon the information I have read so far, I should 1) Clean the cabinets with Circa 1850 Furniture cleaner to remove grease & wax. 2) sand lightly with 200 to 400 grit sandpaper and 3) Use Circa 1850 Stain & Varnish. Did I forget anything? |

RE: refinish kitchen cabinets Message: Circa 1850 Stain'n Varnish can be applied onto bare, stained or finished wood. Use Circa 1850 Furniture Cleaner to remove dirt and polish. Sand wood surface with fine sandpaper. With a lint-free cloth spread a generous coat of Stain'n Varnish over the surface and wipe off excess immediately. Rub evenly in the direction of the grain. Wait 8 hours then smooth lightly with very fine steel wool. Using a cloth slightly dampened with Stain'n Varnish, rub lightly with quick full length strokes in the direction of the grain. Continue until you don't feel any drag on the cloth, and the surface is smooth. You can varnish a scrap piece of wood and use stain n Varnish over top to practise. If you need more open time you can dip your lint free cloth in mineral spirits and move the stain around. good luck |

RE: refinish kitchen cabinets Message: Read your post... my question is similar. I have white-washed oak cabinets... I want to color them darker and make them look distressed. Can I just apply Stain N Varnish without sanding them first? |

RE: refinish kitchen cabinets Message: First you must clean them. Circa 1850 Furniture will work well. Then you must do a light sanding with 220. Then build up the colour very slowly with each successive coat. You can pass 0000 stell very lightly over the surface between coats. Please note that the underlying colour will have an effect on the end result. |

RE: refinish kitchen cabinets Message: what is "pass 0000 stell" mean? To do the "distressed" look, do I put it on very lightly and then wipe some off? Thanks for your help! |

RE: refinish kitchen cabinets Message: Light buff the surface with 0000 steel wool. Yes, wipe on and wipe off most of the finish. |

RE: refinish kitchen cabinets Message: Cabinets are fruitwood color, custom installed in 1968. I would like to try refinishing them. Most are in very good condition but some have the finish rubbed off from constant use and cleaning. What can I use to prepare for painting? What color would be closest to the fruitwood color. Do you have color charts? |

RE: refinish kitchen cabinets Message: you would need to clean the surface a lightly sand. Colour chart is available online from the Stain'n Varnish page. You can also request a colour chart on the Brochure Request page. |

RE: refinish kitchen cabinets Message: I have pickled oak cabinets too. What about the other parts of the cabinets, like the sides, behind the doors, etc.? I am not sure if those parts are wood. Would the Stain'n Varnish work on them too? Also, where can I buy this product in central New Jersey? Thank you. |

RE: refinish kitchen cabinets Message: I have a dark color wood kitchen cabinets (walnut) I would like to go perhaps a blue or white color. There are many, installed in the 70's. Also they are in good condition but too many to replace. What would you suggest the proper procedure would be to begin? Thank you |

RE: refinish kitchen cabinets Message: Clean all the surfaces using Circa 1850 Furniture Cleaner to remove dirt, cooking oils, etc. Lightly sand the surface so that the finish is dulled. Apply a good quality stain-blocking primer, such as Prime-it Plus. Apply a good quality oil-based paint. |

RE: refinish kitchen cabinets Message: Does circa 1850 offer oil based paint or color stain to paint these cabinets? Referring to above message. |

RE: refinish kitchen cabinets Message: Since you appear to be going for an opaque, painted look, it would be best to go with an oil-based paint. Circa 1850 does not make this type of paint. |

RE: refinish kitchen cabinets Message: We purchased a home built in 1991. We have golden oak cabinets, which are looking warn and have a shiny layer of poly. We would like to try to refinish them a darker shade. We found a picture of new cabinets from Medallion which were chestnut colored. We want more of a brown or green/grey hue vs. gold as the honey oak color. To add more confusion we also have golden oak wood floors which we would like the cabinets to blend with. 1. could you recommend a color of Stain'n Varnish? 2. Could this also be used on the wood floors? 3. from what I have read we prepare with TSP (TPS?) or Circa 1850 furniture cleaner. Which is better? 4. Finally, we also like the glazing or weathered look. do you have any suggestion for making them appear this way? Thanks for your help. |

RE: refinish kitchen cabinets Message: We have oak cabinets with a clear laquer finish, about 18 years old, and the wood has darkened with age. We would like to get a much lighter effect. Would a light coloured Stain 'n Varnish such as White Birch or Silver Grey achieve this? |
| Mark 10/12/2006 8:36:34 AM |
RE: refinish kitchen cabinets Message: Yes, you can lighten the tone of the cabinets by applying a wash coat of Circa 1850 Stain'n Varnish in either White Birch or Silver Grey. |
