Subject: using epoxy after 1850

Message:
I have used circa 1850 on mahogany wood boards. I now wish to seal the wood with epoxy prior to varnishing. (for marine use on boat.) Any extra measures I should use more than washing with mineral spirits? thanks.

gheavy body paint and varnish remover. I read the what to use panel, which said "neutralise" NO.
So have gone ahead and put epoxy on surface after careful sanding, with no neutraliser used.
Your web site gives conflicting advice.( And why apply another type of furniture stripper after the heavy body type,)

Message:
Circa 1850 Heavy Body Paints & Varnish Remover is a gel, and some of that gel may remain after stripping. In order to remove the residue, you can wash the surface with Circa 1850 Furniture Stripper or mineral spirits.

Neutralizing involves modifying the pH of something that is either acidic or basic (caustic). So, you NEUTRALIZE an acid by rinsing the surface with a mild base, such as baking soda, and you NEUTRALIZE a base by rinsing the surface with a mild acid, such as vinegar. Since Circa 1850 Heavy Body Paint & Varnish Remover is neither acidic nor basic (in fact, it contains no water at all), there is no need to NEUTRALIZE.
