Finishing a Teak floorMessage: I have just installed a teak wood laminated plank with maple inlay floor in the interior of my boat. There is no finish on the wood yet. I would like to get a deeper & slightly redder look to the teak wood without darkening the white maple inlay. I also would like to have the finished floor with semi gloss sheen. Because this is a high traffic area on the boat the surface needs to be highly durable and water resistant. Do you have any suggestions for a deep rich high contrast finish for this application? |

RE: Finishing a Teak floor Message: The first thing to do is to try to deepen the colour of the teak, and this may be possible simply by wetting it. So, take some mineral spirits or alcohol and rub it on the wood. If the teak gives you the colour you want, great - you can use an oil-based finish and not have stain the wood. If not, you will have to go with a stain. If you need to stain, you will want to make sure the wood is very well sanded to the finest grit possible (this will seal the wood, and further prevent staining of the maple). You can use an oil-based stain or an alcohol-based dye, being careful to avoid getting the stain onto the maple, or immediately wiping it off. This will take some time (this would have been a lot easier to do BEFORE installing the floor......) After the stain has dried, you can apply a good quality oil-based floor polyurethane, such as Circa 1850 Bowling Alley Polyurethane. |

RE: Finishing a Teak floor Message: Hi Mark, Thank you for your reply. I am hoping to avoid staining if at all possible and will test the colour with some oil finishes. IS there anything I should be aware of in varnishing over an oil finish? |

RE: Finishing a Teak floor Message: Make sure any oil finish is thoroughly dry before applying any other finish. |
