Subject: grey left behind when I used Steel Wool

Message:
Hi. I applied Antique Paste Varnish to a bowl, waited 24 hours then sanded lightly with 0000 steel wool. When I did this, certain spots turned grey. What did I do wrong? I wiped it off and even tried fine sand paper sponge to get rid of the grey, but not all of it came off. What can I do for next time? I gave it another coat of the paste varnish, but when that is cured, do I sand it again with the steel wool?

I have never heard of this happening before. Was the finish hard when you sanded lightly? What brand of steel wool did you use?

It was Rhodes American Steel Wool grade 0000. Final finish. Yes, I waited 24 hours and it was dry

Some steel wools are coated with a thin layer of oil that aids in its manufacturing and prevents rust. Possibly yours had an excessive amount. You should be able to remove the grey using paint thinner or a soapy water solution. Alternatives to steel wool are extra fine sandpaper (200, 400 or 600 grit), or extra fine synthetic pads.
