grey left behind when I used Steel WoolMessage: Hi. I applied Antique Paste Varnish to a bowl, waited 24 hours then sanded lightly with 0000 steel wool. When I did this, certain spots turned grey. What did I do wrong? I wiped it off and even tried fine sand paper sponge to get rid of the grey, but not all of it came off. What can I do for next time? I gave it another coat of the paste varnish, but when that is cured, do I sand it again with the steel wool? |

RE: grey left behind when I used Steel Wool Message: I have never heard of this happening before. Was the finish hard when you sanded lightly? What brand of steel wool did you use? |

RE: grey left behind when I used Steel Wool Message: It was Rhodes American Steel Wool grade 0000. Final finish. Yes, I waited 24 hours and it was dry |

RE: grey left behind when I used Steel Wool Message: Some steel wools are coated with a thin layer of oil that aids in its manufacturing and prevents rust. Possibly yours had an excessive amount. You should be able to remove the grey using paint thinner or a soapy water solution. Alternatives to steel wool are extra fine sandpaper (200, 400 or 600 grit), or extra fine synthetic pads. |
