Les Martin Jul 22, 2015 18:48:31 | Circa 1850 Stripper I live in Ottawa & used Circa 1850 stripper for years. I no longer can find this product (all the box stores (Home Depot Wal-mart Rona Canadian Tire Home Hardware, etc) do not carry it anymore. Have you changed the name or stopped producing the stripper? |

Cynthia Peterson Nov 02, 2015 17:51:02 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper I used the Circa 1850 furniture stripper on a veneer table top. I have not "rinsed" it with anything as the can says it is not required. Is the surface compatible with water based stains and topcoats. Your product is great. Thank you. Cynthia |
Mark Nov 03, 2015 10:25:01 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper If you intend to stain the wood, it is very important that you sand the surface prior to application. The reason is that any scraping or scrubbing may have closed off the wood pores, and the stain will not penetrate evenly. It is best to lightly sand with medium grade of sandpaper. Vacuum off the sanding dust and apply your stain. |

Sandra Stapper Dec 16, 2015 08:05:47 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper Hi I just stripped a of kitchen doors and it took a long time for the Swing 1850 gell stripper to work. I expect that the cabinet finish was conversion varnish a post canalized product. I have two sets of doors after Christmas, can you suggest anything to speed up the process. Each door took over 45 minutes to strip, I have stripped dining room tables tops faster than that. |
Sandra Stapper Dec 16, 2015 08:09:04 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper Hi I just spent 45 minutes a piece stripping 17 kitchen doors. It took a long time for the 1850 gell stripper to begin working on the finish. I expect that the original finish was conversion varnish a post canalized product. I have stripped tables faster than that. |
Mark Dec 16, 2015 08:37:47 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper Conversion varnishes are some of the toughest finishes to remove. The fact that Circa 1850 Heavy Body Paint & Varnish Remover was able to strip off the varnish is a testament to the efficacy of this product. It may be faster to strip off the conversion varnish using Circa 1850 Furniture Stripper, but only if you cover the stripper with a plastic sheet or aluminum foil to prevent evaporation. |

Mark Apr 17, 2021 09:48:05 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper Unfortunately, due to new EPA regulations, this product is no longer sold through retail shops. |

Annette Hill Jan 16, 2023 23:12:14 | Re: Circa 1850 d.solver Gel Stripper I have been using Circa 1850 furniture gel stripper for years with great success so naturally when I ran out I went to purchase more. I was unable to purchase my usual Circa 1850 product so I instead purchased the Circa 1850 d.solver Gel Stripper and was very disappointed with the results. I tried it on two different projects I was working on with no success on either piece, all it did was turn the surface white and removed nothing. I cannot recommend this product:( |
Mark Jan 17, 2023 06:40:00 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper It is unfortunate that you were not able to remove the finish using Circa 1850 Super d-Solver. It is possible that the remover was not able to remain active long enough to soften the finish. You may want to apply a thicker coat, or cover the surface with a foil or plastic sheet to provide a longer working time. Each of the Circa 1850 removers works in a different manner, so if you are used to using one you may have to modify your technique when using a different one. Circa 1850 Heavy Body Remover is available at many retailers across Canada. |
Annette Hill Jan 17, 2023 11:38:17 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper The Circa 1850 Gel Stripper I normally used is no longer available so I chose the Super d. solver stripper instead. I followed the directions on the can and re-applied a thick coat three times over a period of 30 mins on a horizontal surface with no luck. It appears a good quality effective product has been replaced by a sub par ineffective product. I'm out approx $60 and not happy about it:( |
Mark Jan 17, 2023 16:29:26 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper Circa 1850 Heavy Body Remover is currently produced and sold throughout Canada. If you let me know where you are located, I can help you find a retailer. |

Mark Jan 24, 2023 16:52:23 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper What varnish remover are you intending to use? How are you going to finish the door now that it is stripped? |
Colleen Mar 04, 2023 10:31:30 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper I live in the United States and cannot seem to find this product sold locally or online. Can I purchase directly from Swing? |
Mark Mar 04, 2023 10:44:38 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper Circa 1850 Furniture Stripper is not sold at US retail or online. The EPA restricts the sale in the US to businesses using a purchase order. The same would be true for Circa 1850 Heavy Body Paint & Varnish Remover, Gaudreault Antiques Removers and Swing Professional Removers. Many of our other strippers are available for sale through the web site. |
Groenestege Home Hardware Aug 09, 2023 15:35:35 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper Gel formula is liquid not gel is this normal? Please let us know Thanks |
Mark Aug 09, 2023 16:20:53 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper Circa 1850 Super D-Solver Gel is not normally a thick gel. The variation in viscosity can be very large due to many factors that relate to a thixotropic liquid. For example, the viscosity can decrease when subject to sheer stresses, rising temperatures, or extended periods of time. That being said, the viscosity of Circa 1850 Super D-Solver Gel will increase once it is applied to a surface, so the consistency in the can is not a reliable measure of gel versus liquid. There are other factors, aside from the viscosity, that will aid in the efficacy of this product, so consistency in the can is not of major concern. It is very common for our paint removers to appear more liquid during the warner months, but that will not markedly affect the function or efficacy. |
Nancy Jan 06, 2024 13:19:36 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper Since I live in the US (Iowa) and I can't buy Circa 1850 stripper here, what is the next best product to use that is available here? |
Mark Jan 06, 2024 14:34:47 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper The EPA prohibits the sale of certain paint strippers to consumers. However, all our stripping products are still available to refinishing, boat repair, and restoration businesses, to name a few. For DIY customers, the most effective removers are Circa 1850 Super d-Solver (liquid and gel versions). Circa 1850 Soft Strip is a safer, more environmentally friendly remover that works slower than the Super d-solver. There are links to how-to videos on the demonstration tab of many of the products. |
John Newgard Mar 31, 2025 08:33:49 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper Which product would be best to clean dry latex paint out of the deep recesses of an aluminum spray gun? What temperature would yield the best results? BTW, I am a big fan of Swing products and buy the gel stripper in 5 gal containers. Love it! |
Mark Mar 31, 2025 09:36:43 | Re: Circa 1850 Stripper If you already have the Swing Professional Gel, you can use it to clean your spray gun. You should give the gun a good rinsing afterwards with either mineral spirits, methanol, or hot water. If you prefer a thinner solvent, the Swing Professional Liquid is a good choice. |
